How to get to Tulum from Cancun Airport

If you’ve booked a trip or a soulful women’s retreat in beautiful Tulum, Mexico you’re probably wondering how to get to Tulum from Cancun Airport. While the journey might seem overwhelming at first, it’s actually easier than you think with the right planning. I’ll be making this trip multiple times for my women’s reterats and I’m here to share what works best for me and the women I host.

Why Most Flights to Tulum Start in Cancun

Tulum doesn’t have its own major international airport (yet), which is why most visitors land in Cancun first. Cancun International Airport (CUN) is the closest and most convenient airport if you’re planning to explore the Riviera Maya or attend a retreat in Tulum. So the big question is: how do you actually get from Cancun to Tulum in a way that feels safe, smooth, and maybe even enjoyable?

The Best Way to Get to Tulum from Cancun Airport

There are several options for how to get to Tulum from Cancun Airport. The one that’s right for you depends on your comfort level, budget, and how much you want to be in control of your time.

  1. Private Transfer (Most Relaxing Option): If you want to start your trip with peace and comfort, a private transfer is 100% worth it. You’ll be greeted at the airport, helped with your bags, and driven directly to your hotel or retreat villa. Pro tip: This is what I always include for the women and couples attending my retreats. It’s safe, direct, and allows you to arrive feeling calm instead of frazzled.
  2. ADO Bus (Most Budget Friendly Option): If you’re traveling solo and want to save money, the ADO bus is a reliable and clean public transportation option. It will take longer than a private transfer and amy require a taxi once you arrive in Tulum, but it’s widely used and easy to navigate.
  3. Car Rental (If You Plan to Explore More): Some travelers opt to rent a car at the airport, especially if they plan on visiting nearby cenotes, ruines, or other towns like Palay del Carmen. Just keep in mind that driving in Mexico is different from the U.S., and traffic laws may vary.
  4. Shared Shuttles (Middle of the Road Option): These are affordable and semi convenient, but they may stop at multiple resorts or hotels on the way down, which could turn your 2 hour ride into 3+ hours. If you’re not in a rush and want to meet other travelers, this can work just fine.

How Long Does It Take to Get to Tulum from Cancun Airport?

On average, it takes about 1.5 to 2 hours by car to get from Cancun Airport to Tulum. Traffic, weather, and time of day can impact this, so I always recommend padding your arrival time. Especially if you’re coming in for a women’s or couples retreat.

My Go To Recommendation for My Retreat Guests

When I host women’s retreats in Tulum, I always recommend a private transfer and I help coordinate those for my guests because it’s all included in your retreat experience. There’s something beautiful about being picked up, watching the jungle pass by, and arriving already in the mindset of rest and reconnection.
